Casper the Friendly Ghost
I would spend these precious, torment-free days glued to the TV, watching as cartoon characters got their heads flattened by frying pans and bodies smashed into accordions. Not surprisingly, this did very little to reduce my stress levels. But the one relatively nonviolent cartoon I eventually discovered turned out to be the most morbid of all, and it left me with one burning question: What, exactly, happened to Casper the Friendly Ghost? In the series The New Casper Cartoon Show, which I watched as reruns, Casper was a lonely creature with a big bald head who longed to make friends despite his spooky nature. He lived in a seemingly abandoned house with several adult ghosts, including not just one, but three creepy uncles. His uncles and other fellow ghosts viewed Casper with contempt for his softhearted benevolence toward the living. Not only did he have no interest in inducing mortal panic attacks, he was literally willing to befriend anything with a pulse.
Casper the Friendly Ghost is the protagonist of the Famous Studios theatrical animated cartoon series of the same name. He is a pleasant and personable ghost , but often criticized by his three wicked uncles, the Ghostly Trio. The character was featured in 55 theatrical cartoons made between and Casper became one of Harvey's most popular characters, headlining dozens of comic book titles. Casper was created in the late s by Seymour Reit and Joe Oriolo , the former devising the idea for the character and the latter providing illustrations. This one-time payment was all that he received, missing out on a share of the revenue earned from the films, comic books and merchandising to come. The Friendly Ghost , the first Noveltoon to feature Casper, was released by Paramount in with a few differences from the book. In the cartoon adaptation, Casper is a cute ghost-child with a New York accent who inhabits a haunted house along with a community of adult ghosts who delight in scaring the living.
This page is about the character. For other uses, see Casper disambiguation. Casper is a good ghost, who, much to the chagrin of his uncles , prefers to help people, rather than scare them. Not much is known about how Casper came to be a ghost, or how he did end up with the Ghostly Trio. According to the feature film Casper , he died when contracted pneumonia from playing out in the cold for too long, but so far, that's the only version there is. Casper's death as well as the reason why he became friendly has become disputed since then. In the s and s, the stock answer provided by Harvey Comics in response to those wondering how Casper died was that he was a ghost simply because his parents were already ghosts when they were married. According to the film, Casper died from pneumonia. In the original Harveytoons animation, Casper has been seen standing next to a grave inscribed with "Casper", that supports the theory he is indeed a ghost.
